NID restricts fires in campgrounds to reduce wildfire risk

Nevada Irrigation District (NID) is implementing new fire restrictions in its foothill campgrounds beginning Monday, June 22 at 8 a.m. to reduce wildfire risk during hot, dry summer conditions.

Under the restrictions, wood and charcoal fires will be prohibited in all NID-operated campgrounds, including fire rings and BBQ grills.

The change applies to recreation areas around Scotts Flat and Rollins reservoirs.

“This decision is about protecting public safety during increasingly dry and hazardous conditions,” said Monica Reyes, NID Director of Recreation. “Even well-managed fires can escape control under the right conditions. We’re requesting visitors to help us reduce risk by eliminating wood and charcoal fires for the season.”

Propane fire rings and propane BBQs will remain permitted; however, visitors are asked to keep flames low and always use caution when operating gas-fueled devices.

The fire restrictions apply to the following campgrounds:

  • Scotts Flat Campground
  • Orchard Springs Campground
  • Long Ravine Campground
  • Peninsula Campground
  • Greenhorn Campground

NID reminds visitors that wildfire prevention is a shared responsibility. As temperatures rise and conditions become more fire-prone, even a small spark can have serious consequences for nearby forests, communities, and critical watershed areas.
