NID's Biggest Reservoir Doesn't Have a Dam

They're all important—but the biggest reservoir doesn't have a dam. It's the Sierra snowpack.

 

Nature's Water Storage System

Each winter, storms blanket the Sierra Nevada with snow. That snow acts like a giant natural reservoir, storing water until warmer temperatures gradually release it through spring and early summer.

Instead of rushing downstream all at once, snowmelt steadily feeds streams, reservoirs, farms, and communities when water is needed most.

For more than a century, NID's water system has relied on this natural cycle.

Why Snow Matters

Rain and snow may contain the same amount of water, but they behave very differently.

Rain moves quickly through the watershed. Snow stores water for weeks or even months, releasing it slowly as temperatures rise.

Think of the Sierra snowpack as a natural savings account: winter storms make the deposits, and spring snowmelt provides the withdrawals.

That slow, steady release is one of California's greatest water resources.

A Changing Water Cycle

As temperatures rise, more winter storms are expected to fall as rain instead of snow, and the snow that does accumulate is expected to melt earlier.

That means more water may flow through the watershed during winter, leaving less natural storage for late spring and summer—when demand is often highest.

The challenge isn't just how much precipitation falls. It's whether nature can store that water until it's needed.

Planning Ahead

Understanding how the Sierra snowpack may change is a key part of NID's Plan for Water.

Using climate science and water modeling, the District is evaluating a range of future conditions to help guide decisions about water supply, infrastructure, and long-term reliability.

While no one can predict exactly what future winters will bring, planning today helps ensure reliable water for tomorrow.
