FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
GRASS VALLEY - The Nevada Irrigation
District will spend an additional $86,000 to prepare a full environmental impact
report (EIR) for the planned DS Canal Flume Replacement Project near Nevada
City.
The additional level of study was recommended by staff and approved Wednesday
(Jan. 9) by the NID Board of Directors.
The district already has completed extensive environmental studies on the
project to replace the last eight of 31 original flumes on the 1926 canal but
two property owners have continued their objections to the project.
Preparation of the EIR is expected to take five months but district officials
remain hopeful they will be able to complete the project and supply more water
to downstream customers by late 2009. Delivery restrictions are now in place in
areas supplied by the DS (Deer Creek South) system.
In other business, directors:
- heard a presentation from General Manager Ron Nelson
who applauded the district’s operations and maintenance crews for their work
in maintaining water service and minimizing system damage during last week’s
major storms.
- approved boundary lines and agreed to ask for the
County of Nevada’s support in the formation of an assessment district to
supply water to 36 parcels in the Rodeo Flat area, west of Lake of the
Pines. Property owners have been working with the district to obtain treated
water service.
- were introduced to four new employees who have joined
the NID Maintenance Department. The board welcomed utility workers Jonathan
Davis, Timothy Rowe, Robert Fogleman and Kevin Waters.
The next regular meeting of the NID Board of Directors
will be held at 9 a.m. on Jan. 23 at the NID Business Center in Grass Valley.
NID board meetings are open to the public.
